The Bamboo Sound wayfinding system, designed by Fengqi Gong, is a unique and innovative addition to the Hotel of Seazen in Liyang City. Inspired by the cultural charm of the city, this design aims to create a harmonious blend of nature and modernity.
What sets the Bamboo Sound wayfinding system apart is its concise frame structure, derived from the traditional framing techniques of South Chinese Gardens. The internal materials, made of light-thin frosted acrylic, flow like a tranquil lake. The decorative surface features bamboo leaves that appear as if they are reflected on the water's surface. As the ambient light changes, mottled and broken shadows are cast on the surface, reminiscent of sunlight shining through bamboo forests. This marking system adds the finishing touch to the public spaces of the hotel.
The realization of the Bamboo Sound wayfinding system involves the use of multilayer frosted semitransparent acrylic, which is carefully overlaid. The back of the acrylic is baked with white paint, while bamboo patterns are silk printed on the back. Information is silk printed on the outermost surface, creating different levels of space with the patterns. The acrylic is then fixed within a copper frame, adding a touch of elegance to the design.
With regards to technical specifications, the frame size of the Bamboo Sound wayfinding system adheres to a platinum ratio. The P1 frame measures 740mm x 425mm, with a sign body of 925mm x 380mm. The P2 frame measures 1650mm x 390mm, with a sign body of 1890mm x 345mm.
When interacting with the Bamboo Sound wayfinding system, guests will be greeted by the sight of fresh and elegant bamboo leaves swaying gently in the wind. The large area of bamboo leaf elements within the interior decoration environment complements this experience, creating a sense of being immersed in the leisurely Nanshan Bamboo Sea. This design allows guests to truly experience the city's culture and temperament.
The Bamboo Sound wayfinding system was conceptualized and brought to life by a team of talented individuals. Led by design director Fengqi Gong, the team included designers Yiqin Xia and Yaping Peng.
The project commenced in Hangzhou in March 2019 and was completed in June. Throughout the design process, the team conducted extensive research on bamboo patterns, studying the works of Chinese masters and refining the shape and essence of bamboo. Classic paintings and artworks by Tang Yin, a famous painter in the Ming Dynasty, and Zheng Banqiao, a renowned calligrapher and painter in the Qing Dynasty, served as valuable sources of inspiration. The goal was to achieve a fresh, simple, comfortable, and natural artistic conception.
The design process presented its fair share of challenges. One of the main creative challenges was integrating culture into the design and making it the core of the project. Additionally, finding suitable materials to express the natural and comfortable shape of bamboo reflections in water proved to be a difficulty and a focal point in achieving the desired effect.
The Bamboo Sound wayfinding system has received recognition for its outstanding design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Building Materials and Construction Components Design category in 2020. This prestigious award is bestowed upon designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving quality of life through art, science, design, and technology.
